Forward-Deployed Engineer

Be the first dedicated full-time engineer at AH Datalytics. This is a full-stack role with a backend focus. You will own data pipelines, infrastructure, and server-side architecture while also working across the stack and deploying directly alongside clients. You will report to the co-founders and the Director of Product & Growth. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. As the firm grows, this role has a path to leading the engineering function.

What You'll Do

  • Build and ship custom software, data tools, and web applications for organizations serving the public good
  • Serve as the technical lead across diverse projects spanning dashboards, GIS applications, data pipelines, and more
  • Communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences, including clients, partners, and leadership
  • Help develop and refine internal processes and systems as the company scales
  • Be the line of defense and quality assurance for any technical project the firm takes on

What We're Looking For

  • Strong backend engineering skills as the foundation, with full-stack capability to build any type of technical product or software
  • Ability to learn new technologies and domains quickly and independently
  • Comfort owning projects end-to-end, from scoping through deployment
  • Clear communicator who sees the big picture and can bridge technical and non-technical teams
  • Fluent in AI-assisted development workflows (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot) to ship faster and at higher quality
  • Capable of building AI-powered features and products for clients, from LLM integrations to intelligent data tools
  • Excitement about helping build a growing firm, not just writing code

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience (3+ with a Master's degree)
  • Proficiency in Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, or a similar modern language
  • Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or similar)
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Vercel/serverless)
  • Experience building and consuming REST APIs or GraphQL
  • Version control with Git and comfort with CI/CD workflows

Bonus

  • Domain expertise in a policy area such as criminal justice, education, environment, housing, or healthcare
  • Experience working in or with government agencies
